British Airways is revamping its London Heathrow to Tokyo Haneda route with a fleet upgrade starting March 31, 2024, coinciding with the 2024 summer schedule. The airline will introduce the Airbus A350-1000 on the morning rotation, replacing the Boeing 787-9, while the midday flight will see the Boeing 777-300ER replaced by the 787-9.
This strategic change brings the A350-1000, the latest addition to British Airways' fleet, to the Haneda route for the first time. The A350-1000 will operate daily as flight BA7, departing Heathrow at 9:10 AM and arriving in Haneda at 7:00 PM the following day. The return flight, BA8, will depart Haneda at 8:50 AM and land in Heathrow at 3:45 PM.
While the A350-1000 offers a higher overall seat capacity compared to the 787-9 (331 seats vs. 216), it will result in the removal of First Class from the morning rotation. However, passengers will still have the option to choose between Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class.
The midday flight, BA5, will now be operated by the Boeing 787-9, departing Heathrow at 1:00 PM and arriving in Haneda at 10:55 AM the next day. The return flight, BA6, will depart Haneda at 1:05 PM and land in Heathrow at 7:55 PM. This change will lead to a slight reduction in overall seat capacity but maintains the four-class configuration.
Overall, these fleet adjustments will result in a net increase of 77 seats per day on the route. However, the distribution of premium seats will shift, with First Class seats reduced from 16 to 8 and Business Class seats decreasing from 114 to 94.
This move reflects British Airways' ongoing efforts to optimise its operations and enhance passenger experience on key routes like London-Tokyo. By introducing the modern and efficient A350-1000, the airline aims to provide a more comfortable and sustainable travel option for its customers while maintaining a competitive edge in the market.
