Emirates has taken a significant step towards a greener future by receiving over 3,000 metric tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Shell Aviation at London Heathrow Airport. This substantial supply, blended with conventional jet fuel, will power numerous Emirates flights departing from Heathrow throughout the summer season.
The initiative is supported by London Heathrow's SAF Incentive Programme, which helps offset the higher costs associated with SAF. Adel Al Redha, Emirates' Deputy President and Chief Operations Officer, expressed enthusiasm for this collaboration, highlighting the importance of the incentive program in making SAF more commercially viable for airlines.
This partnership is set to contribute to Heathrow's ambitious goal of supplying up to 155,000 tonnes of SAF this year, as stated by Ross Baker, the airport's Chief Commercial Officer.
This is not Emirates' first foray into SAF. The airline already utilises blended SAF for flights from Amsterdam, Paris, Lyon, Oslo, and, starting in May, Singapore. Emirates continues to actively explore ways to expand the use of sustainable aviation fuel across its extensive network, underscoring its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting a more sustainable future for air travel.
